Should I Contact My Ex?

Should I Contact My Ex After a Breakup?

A breakup can leave you with a strong urge to contact the person you still care about.

You may want to apologize, ask what went wrong, explain how you feel, or simply hear their voice again.

But before sending that message, there is an important question to ask:

Would contacting my ex actually help the situation, or am I contacting them because I am struggling with the separation?

There is no universal answer.

Sometimes reaching out can open the door to an honest conversation. Other times, contacting an ex too soon can make an already difficult situation more painful.

The circumstances of the breakup matter.

Before You Contact Your Ex, Ask Yourself Why

The first question isn’t:

“What should I say?”

It’s:

“Why do I want to contact them?”

You might want to reach out because:

  • You genuinely want to apologize.
  • You need closure.
  • You want to discuss something unresolved.
  • You believe the relationship could be repaired.
  • You miss them.
  • You are afraid of losing them permanently.
  • You want to know whether they still care.
  • You feel lonely without them.
  • You want another chance.

Some of these reasons may lead to a healthy conversation.

Others may come from the pain and anxiety that often follow a breakup.

Taking a little time to understand your motivation can prevent you from sending a message you later regret.

When Contacting Your Ex May Make Sense

There are situations where reaching out can be reasonable.

For example, perhaps the breakup happened without serious conflict and you both remain open to communication.

You may also want to apologize for something you genuinely regret.

Or perhaps enough time has passed for both of you to calm down and think more clearly.

In these situations, a simple and respectful message may be appropriate.

The goal should be communication, not pressure.

When You Should Give Your Ex Space

There are also situations where contacting your ex is probably not a good idea.

If they have:

  • Asked you not to contact them
  • Blocked you
  • Clearly said they want space
  • Told you the relationship is over
  • Become uncomfortable with your messages
  • Asked you to leave them alone

then their boundary should be respected.

Finding another number, creating another social-media account, or repeatedly asking friends to contact them is unlikely to create the kind of healthy foundation reconciliation requires.

You cannot build a healthy relationship by ignoring someone’s boundaries.

What If My Ex Hasn’t Contacted Me?

Silence can be difficult to interpret.

You might think:

“If they still loved me, surely they would contact me.”

But people respond to breakups differently.

Someone may need space.

Someone may be processing their emotions.

Someone may be uncertain.

And sometimes someone may simply have decided to move on.

You cannot reliably determine another person’s feelings from silence alone.

Instead of repeatedly checking your phone or trying to decode every small sign, give yourself time to consider the relationship honestly.

What If I Still Want My Ex Back?

Wanting reconciliation after a breakup is understandable.

But wanting your ex back and being ready for reconciliation are not necessarily the same thing.

Ask yourself:

Why did the relationship end?

What would need to change?

Have those problems actually been addressed?

Would getting back together create a healthier relationship?

Does my ex appear willing to have that conversation?

If nothing changes, returning to the same relationship may simply recreate the same problems.

Reconciliation Is About Two People

This is something I believe is often overlooked.

You can want reconciliation deeply, but you cannot make the decision for your former partner.

A genuine reconciliation requires two people to participate willingly.

That means both people need the opportunity to:

  • communicate honestly;
  • understand what went wrong;
  • acknowledge their own mistakes;
  • discuss what needs to change;
  • decide whether they want to try again.

Spiritual guidance can be something a person chooses to explore while navigating this process, but it should not be presented as a way to override another person’s free choice.

What If I Don’t Know Whether My Ex Still Has Feelings?

This is one of the hardest parts of a breakup.

You may notice things that make you wonder:

“Does my ex still care about me?”

Perhaps they look at your social media.

Perhaps they ask mutual friends about you.

Perhaps they contact you occasionally.

These things can be meaningful, but they don’t necessarily mean they want to restart the relationship.

The only reliable way to understand someone’s intentions is through honest communication, when both people are willing to have it.

Should I Send a Long Emotional Message?

Usually, I would advise caution.

When you’re hurting, you may feel that you need to explain everything:

  • How much you miss them
  • Everything you regret
  • Why you think the breakup happened
  • Why you believe you belong together
  • Everything you want to change

But a long emotional message can place pressure on someone who may already be overwhelmed.

If communication is appropriate, simple and respectful is often better than overwhelming.

For example:

“I’ve had some time to think about what happened. If you’re ever comfortable talking, I’d be open to having a respectful conversation.”

You don’t need to send that message, and every situation is different. The point is simply that communication should leave room for the other person to choose.

What If My Ex Is Already Seeing Someone Else?

This can make reconciliation even more complicated.

If your former partner is in another relationship, you should not assume that their new relationship is temporary or that you have a right to interfere with it.

You can still have feelings for your ex.

You can still wish things had worked out differently.

But their current choices deserve respect.

If you are struggling with this situation, spiritual guidance may help you reflect on what you are experiencing without turning that guidance into a promise that another relationship will end.

What About Spiritual Guidance?

Some people seek African spiritual guidance when they are struggling to understand a separation or trying to decide how to approach a relationship.

My approach is not to tell someone that a particular spell will automatically make an ex return.

Instead, I encourage people to explain their circumstances first.

The relationship history, circumstances of the breakup, current communication, and what you hope to achieve all matter.

What About Reconciliation Spiritual Work?

Reconciliation-related spiritual work is something some people choose to explore when they remain deeply connected to a former partner.

However, I believe it is important to approach this honestly.

No practitioner can guarantee that another person will:

  • Return to a relationship
  • Fall in love again
  • Contact you
  • Change their mind
  • Leave another relationship
  • Make a particular decision

Your former partner has their own choices.

Spiritual work should not be presented as a guaranteed method of controlling those choices.

What If You Already Contacted Your Ex?

Don’t panic.

If you’ve already sent several messages, don’t make the situation worse by sending even more.

Give the situation space.

If your ex responds, listen rather than immediately trying to convince them to return.

If they don’t respond, accept that silence is also information.

You cannot control whether another person responds.

You can control how you respond to their decision.

What Should You Do Instead of Contacting Your Ex?

A breakup creates a lot of emotional energy, and you need somewhere healthy to put it.

You can use the time to:

Understand the relationship

Think honestly about what worked and what didn’t.

Look at your own behaviour

Were there things you could have handled differently?

Give your ex space

Distance can sometimes allow emotions to settle.

Take care of yourself

Eat properly, sleep, exercise, spend time with people you trust, and avoid making every part of your day about your ex.

Think about what reconciliation would actually require

If you got back together tomorrow, what would need to change?

That’s a much more useful question than simply asking:

“How do I get my ex back?”

When Spiritual Guidance May Be Worth Exploring

If you’ve spent time thinking about the situation but still feel uncertain, you may choose to speak with a spiritual practitioner.

You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what service you need.

You can simply explain:

  • What happened
  • How long you’ve been separated
  • Whether you’re still communicating
  • What you want
  • What concerns you most

From there, you can explore whether spiritual guidance may be appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I contact my ex first?

It depends on the circumstances. If they have asked you not to contact them or have blocked you, respect that boundary. If communication remains open, a respectful conversation may sometimes be appropriate.

How long should I wait before contacting my ex?

There is no universal number of days. The right timing depends on the circumstances, the reason for the breakup, and whether both people are open to communication.

What if my ex hasn’t contacted me?

Don’t automatically assume that silence means they hate you or still love you. You cannot know their feelings without communication.

Should I contact my ex if they blocked me?

If your ex has blocked you, repeatedly finding other ways to contact them is not advisable. Respect the boundary.

Can spiritual guidance help me understand my breakup?

Some people seek spiritual guidance when trying to understand difficult relationship situations. A private consultation can give you an opportunity to discuss your circumstances.

Can you guarantee that my ex will come back?

No. I do not guarantee another person’s thoughts, feelings, decisions, or actions.

Before You Send That Message

If you’re sitting with your phone right now wondering whether to contact your ex, take a breath before you press send.

Ask yourself:

Why am I contacting them?

Have I respected their boundaries?

What do I actually want to achieve?

Would reconciliation solve the problems that ended the relationship?

And most importantly:

Am I prepared to accept their answer even if it isn’t the answer I want?
